How did the forum go:

On May 15–16, the Second Endoscopic Forum of Central Asia was held in Astana. The event focused on current issues and future prospects for the development of endoscopy in the region. It brought together specialists from various medical fields, including endoscopists, gastroenterologists, surgeons, oncologists, and endoscopic nurses. The forum was organized by the Kazakh Endoscopic Society and the National Research Oncology Center.

The forum took place at two venues: the Radisson Hotel (4 Saryarka Avenue) and the National Research Oncology Center (3/2 Kerey and Zhanibek Khans Street). A major highlight of the event was the large-scale exhibition of endoscopic equipment and tools. Nineteen leading manufacturers and distributors showcased their products in a 540-square-meter space in the hotel lobby.

The first day of the forum was dedicated to lectures. Speakers from ten countries—Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, India, Belarus, Ukraine, Mongolia, Russia, South Korea, and Japan—shared their expertise. A total of 380 participants attended in person, while another 359 joined online from locations ranging from Saudi Arabia to Japan. In the main hall, sessions focused on diseases of the upper and lower gastrointestinal tract and the gastroduodenal area. The smaller hall hosted sessions on bronchoscopy, pediatric endoscopy, and general topics in endoscopy.

The second day was dedicated to live clinical procedures. Endoscopic surgeries were broadcast in real time both in the conference room and online. There were 120 participants attending in person and 47 more online. A total of six procedures were performed. All patients were admitted through the national electronic portal, without using administrative quotas.

In the first operating room, doctors performed a peroral pneumatic dilation for achalasia and an endoscopic submucosal dissection of a laterally spreading rectal lesion. In the second operating room, three patients with biliary strictures after liver transplantation underwent cholangioscopy using the latest disposable cholangioscopes from Boston Scientific, Vedkang, and Micro-Tech. All three patients had successful outcomes with plastic stents placed, and they were discharged in stable condition. No complications were reported, and all patients were referred for follow-up care in their local hospitals.

In addition, a hands-on training zone was organized on the second day, where participants practiced key procedures such as stenting, ligation, and clipping under expert supervision.

This forum became an important platform for professional exchange, the introduction of advanced technologies, and the strengthening of international cooperation in the field of endoscopy across Central Asia.

The need for a separate Endoscopic Forum has been overdue for a long time, since in major conferences held in Kazakhstan such as the Congress of Surgeons, the Central Asian Gastronomy Week, little attention is paid to the issues and problems of endoscopy and there is not even a separate section on endoscopy. If we touch on the history of endoscopy problems, since 2007 there has been no separate specialty of endoscopy in the Nomenclature of medical and pharmaceutical specialties, although there are still endoscopic rooms and endoscopic departments in medical and preventive institutions of the republic.

Due to numerous appeals from both individual endoscopists and official requests from the Kazakh Endoscopic Society to the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Kazakhstan, in 2021, endoscopy appeared in the Nomenclature of specialties as a specialization. Therefore, a group of enthusiasts from among endoscopists, with the support of sponsors from manufacturers of endoscopic equipment and instruments, has begun preparations for such a large-scale endoscopy event.

And considering that Kazakhstan is a leader in terms of mastering and introducing into wide practice the latest methods of endoscopic diagnosis and endoscopic treatment in Central Asian countries, it was decided to name our conference as the Endoscopic Forum of Central Asia, and not only Kazakhstan.

The NGO "Kazakh Endoscopic Society" was established in 2016 to defend the interests of endoscopists of the Republic of Kazakhstan, to develop "safe and reliable endoscopy" in all regions of our republic, to improve the quality of endoscopic services provided, to conduct scientific and practical seminars and conferences with international participation, as well as to support young specialists in endoscopy. Another goal of our professional society is to build equal and friendly relations with professional societies of endoscopists and gastroenterologists from near and far abroad.

With these goals in mind, the Kazakh Endoscopic Society participates in conducting regional workshops on diagnostic and operative endoscopy, finances the production of textbooks and practical manuals, and also helps train young specialists in leading endoscopy centers abroad. And one ambitious goal of our society is the desire to be a center of developed and high-quality endoscopy in Central Asia, which is definitely on the shoulder of Kazakh specialists.
